The Winter 2013 issue of UCR Magazine is celebrating the newly accredited School of Medicine — the first public medical school to open in California in 45 years. How UCR is choosing its future doctors will greatly impact the quality of health care in the Inland region; read all about it in print, online or on the iPad reader.

Distinguished Professor Natasha V. Raikhel, who was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences for her excellence in original scientific research, is featured in the magazine as well. The Ernst and Helen Leibacher Endowed Chair in Plant Molecular, Cell Biology & Genetics and the director of UCR’s Center for Plant Cell Biology and the Institute for Integrative Genome Biology talked about falling in love with science after being trained in her youth as a classical pianist. In our online-only feature, Raikhel discusses the future of genomics at UCR, how plant cell biology impacts our lives, how being elected into the National Academy of Sciences has impacted her life and more.

A feature on the venerable music venue the Barn is also in the magazine; as an online extra, Aquabats lead singer Christian Jacobs and Yo Gabba Gabba creator talks about his memories of playing at the Barn in the 1990s. “The Barn is special because it’s [on] campus and [you’re playing] for college crowds,” Jacobs says. “The college experience is very unique … like, okay, we’re going to do a little studying and going to have a lot of fun. … That [idea] is really indicative of the Barn, as the epicenter of  UCR.”

UCR Magazine is also introducing a new feature called “From Mind to Market,” which illustrates research or projects from UCR faculty that are available for public consumption. The feature traces the idea from its conception  to mass availability. First up? Creative writing professor Tom Lutz’s LA Review of Books (lareviewofbooks.org).

Lastly, UCR Magazine pays tribute to former Chancellor Timothy P. White’s contributions to the UCR legacy. The magazine is available online at ucrmagazine.ucr.edu. Other online features, such as videos of the School of Medicine and the Barn, are also available for viewing on the site.
