RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC Riverside Chamber Singers and the Department of Music Jazz Combo will share a noontime, outdoor concert on Wednesday, March 13, as part of the “Music as Medicine” concert series on the patio of the School of Medicine’s Education Building.

The concerts are free and open to the public. Parking on campus will cost $6 for individuals without a current UCR parking permit. Purchase permits at the information kiosk on West Campus Drive near the campus entrance at University Avenue.

The Chamber Singers is a chorus of 30 select singers conducted by Ruth Charloff, specializing in a cappella music from the Renaissance to the present day. Their performance will feature a lively selection of 20th century African-American, Anglo-American and English choral music. The UCR Jazz Combo is a student-run ensemble, loosely under the direction of Matt Zebley, and consists of three horns, guitar, bass and drums. The group performs a wide variety of repertoire including jazz standards, bebop lines, modal compositions and the modern jazz music of extant composers.

The Wednesday concert series celebrates “the infectious, healing joy of improvised music and vocal music,” said Paulo Chagas, professor and chair of the Department of Music.

Remaining concerts in the series include:

  • March 13: Chamber Singers, directed by Ruth Charloff, and Jazz Combo, directed by Matt Zebley
  • April 17: Chamber Music, directed by Frances Moore and featuring violinist Frances Moore, cellist Manon Robertshaw and pianist Kim Amin
