RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Colleges Against Cancer chapter at the University of California, Riverside will host the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life on May 18 and 19 at the Riverside Sports Complex. The 24-hour walk raises awareness of cancer, as well as funds that support ongoing research to combat it.

The walk begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18 and will continue 24 hours, concluding the next morning at 9 a.m. Walkers will make their way around the Riverside Sports Complex at the corner of W. Blaine St. and Canyon Crest Dr., just north of the UCR campus. In 2012, more than four million people around the world participated in the event.

“In years past, the Relay for Life has put an emphasis on student involvement, but this year we want to get our entire campus community, including staff and faculty, involved,” said Cori Knight, a graduate student and luminaria chair of the event. “This event is not just a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It is to educate about cancer prevention and provide a source of support for cancer survivors of all ages and backgrounds on campus.

There are several ways to participate in the event, including walking as an individual or part of a team, as a survivor, or by making a tax-deductible donation.

“Cancer affects us all,” said Julie Chobdee, Wellness Program coordinator at UCR. “Everyone’s support can make a difference in helping to fight this devastating disease for good.”

During the nighttime portion of the walk, the path will be illuminated with lumniaria bags dedicated to the memory of someone lost to cancer or in honor of a survivor. Luminarias can purchased with a $10 donation at the Relay for Life website.

Funds raised at the walk will stay locally, helping patients, survivors and researchers at in the Riverside community. Donations are tax deductible
