UCR Medical School and Music Department Present “Music as Medicine” Series

Free noontime concert series begins Feb. 27 featuring student performing groups

The “Music as Medicine” concert series begins Feb. 27.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Student performing groups from the Department of Music will be featured in a series of free noontime concerts that kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 27, on the patio of the School of Medicine Education Building.

The “Music as Medicine” series, conceived jointly by faculty in the Department of Music and School of Medicine, begins with the North Indian Tabla Drum Ensemble, directed by Abhiman Kaushal, and the Bagpipe Ensemble, directed by Ian Whitelaw. The free performances are open to the campus and greater Riverside community.

All of the concerts will be held at noon on the outdoor patio on the north side of the School of Medicine Education Building, adjacent to the well-traveled pedestrian plaza between that building and the Orbach Science Library.

The concert series schedule is as follows:

  • Feb. 27: North Indian Tabla Drum Ensemble, directed by Abhiman Kaushal, and the Bagpipe Ensemble, directed by Ian Whitelaw
  • April 3: Choral Society, directed by G. Edward Bruner, and the Bluegrass Ensemble, directed by Janet Beazley
  • April 10: Jazz Sextet, directed by Chloe Keedy
  • April 17: Latin American Ensemble, Mayupatapi , directed by Jonathan Ritter
  • May 1: Chamber Singers, directed by Ruth Charloff, and Collegium Musicum, directed by Janet Beazley

There is no admission charge for the concerts. Parking on campus will cost $6 for individuals without a current UCR parking permit. Purchase permits at the information kiosk near the campus entrance at University Avenue.
