RIVERSIDE, Calif.  — The annual Community Week at the University of California, Riverside will be held May 19-22, 2014. The celebration is sponsored by the UC Riverside Staff Assembly, but all events are open to staff, students and faculty.

“Community Week is an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to join together and celebrate our shared goals of making UC Riverside the premier institution in the country,” said Staff Assembly President and Graduate School of Education Information Technology Manager Robert Wolfer. “It is a time for fellowship at the picnic, to acknowledge staff milestones at the general meeting, to walk together for health andto  plant some plants to make UCR a more attractive campus at the beautification event. All events are during the lunch hour, so I encourage everyone to attend as many as possible.”

The week starts off with the Staff Assembly Spring Barbeque and Picnic on Monday, May 19 at noon on the Hinderaker Hall lawn. The first 400 people to register will receive a free lunch, but individuals who bring their lunch from home or prefer to purchase lunch are also welcome to attend. Attendees are encouraged to “bring their own blanket,” sit on the grass and enjoy a casual lunch. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to reply promptly as the event fills up quickly.

On Tuesday, May 20 at noon, Staff Assembly will hold their quarterly General Meeting in HUB 302. In addition to the regular service awards presentation, outgoing President Robert Wolfer will announce the new 2014-15 Staff Assembly Board and finalists for the annual Outstanding Staff Awards. In addition, Vice Chancellor for Planning & Budget Maria R. Anguiano and outgoing Staff Advisor to the Regents Kathy Barton are scheduled to speak. Individuals who are receiving a service award should RSVP their attendance.

On Wednesday, May 21, staff, students and faculty can join with their colleagues from across the UC system as they participate in UC Walks. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the UCR Track and will include giveaways and a raffle drawing. For more information, visit the UCR Wellness/Walking Fit website.

The week of activities wraps up on Thursday, May 22 at noon as volunteers will make-over a garden area on the northeast side of Boyce Hall facing Physics 2000. Gloves, shovels and supplies will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to  wear clothes they don’t mind getting a little dirty. RSVP for the beautification project here.

In addition to the events, guests will be able to show their appreciation for their fellow Highlanders with a “Thank You BEAR-y Much” card. The cards, which will be available at events throughout the week, feature a picture of Scotty and give the sender a chance to say thanks to co-workers, mentors and friends.
