RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Kevin B. McGuire, a long-time banking executive and Coachella Valley resident, has been appointed to the new position of Special Assistant to the Chancellor of UC Riverside for the Coachella Valley.

McGuire, who started on the job on March 12, is based at UCR’s Palm Desert Center.  In the position, McGuire will foster UCR community outreach, business community involvement and collaborative relationships with Coachella Valley public and private organizations.

UCR Chancellor Timothy P. White and Lars Walton, UCR assistant vice chancellor for Community and Government Relations said the appointment will support the positioning of the UCR Palm Desert Center to ensure it is meeting the needs of the Coachella Valley.

Said White: “We are delighted to have Kevin McGuire join our team at the UCR Palm Desert Center.  He is a dedicated community participant and respected business executive, and has a deep commitment to the Coachella Valley.  His appointment is another example of the strong relationships the university has had in the area since the early 1900s.”

Added Walton: “Kevin will be a great asset to the University.  He has long-standing relationships in the Coachella Valley and will help more deeply connect UC Riverside to our region.
McGuire will, among other activities, conduct a feasibility analysis assessing the needs of the Coachella Valley and examining ways in which UCR can contribute to the intellectual and economic development of the region within the scope of its research, teaching, and service mission.

McGuire said he was pleased to be able to join UCR in its mission.  “I’m excited about joining UCR in its mission —  and in working with the private and public sectors in the region to develop opportunities and programs that will meet the needs of the Coachella Valley.”

McGuire has in past service worked for Bank of America, Norwest Bank of Minneapolis, and the First Bank System-Minneapolis.  He joined Palm Desert National Bank in 1989 and served as its Chairman and CEO for more than 20 years.  In civic engagement, he serves as a trustee of Eisenhower Medical Center and is a member of the board of Directors of Shelter from the Storm, Food in Need of Distribution, the Coachella Valley Education Foundation, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Humana Challenge Golf Tournament.
