Ecotoxicologist Chairs EPA Scientific Advisory Panel
Daniel Schlenk’s term ends in February 2013
Daniel Schlenk, a professor of aquatic ecotoxicology at the University of California, Riverside has been appointed the chair of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide ActScientific Advisory Panel (FIFRA SAP).
His term, which began May 1, 2012, will end Feb. 7, 2013.
Schlenk will provide the FIFRA SAP with his best independent judgment based on his expertise in toxicology and environmental health sciences. In addition, he will chair and facilitate meetings as needed and review meeting minutes to ensure their accuracy and completeness.
The FIFRA SAP provides independent scientific advice, information and recommendations on pesticides and pesticide-related issues as to the impact on health and the environment of regulatory actions. Its members, who are nominated by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, neither make nor recommend policy decisions. They simply provide advice on the science used to make these decisions.
The FIFRA SAP has a total of seven members.
About Schlenk:
Schlenk’s research interests focus upon mechanisms of action of pesticides and emerging compounds in aquatic organisms. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he serves on the editorial boards of Toxicological Sciences, Aquatic Toxicology and Marine Environmental Research. He has co-edited a 2 volume series entitled “Target Organ Toxicity in Marine and Freshwater Teleosts” and has published more than 165 peer reviewed journal articles.
