The UCR Barn Announces Exciting Schedule for Fall 2012 Concert Series

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu)  — Omar Rodríguez-López, guitarist and producer of the progressive rock band The Mars Volta, and Los Angeles-based eight-piece The Mowgli’s highlight 2012 Fall Schedule of the UC Riverside Barn concert venue.

“With over 50 years of hosting some of the most iconic musicians and performers, as well as being one of the oldest structures on campus, The UCR Barn remains a relevant and important musical landmark in Southern California,” said David Sakover, public events manager for the venue. “We take great pride in the quality of acts we bring to UCR.”

The shows are held most Wednesday’s from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. at UCR’s venerable concert venue located on West Campus Drive. Tickets can be purchased at the UCR Theater Ticket Office and Ticketmaster. The scheduled performers include:

    • The Mowgli’s, who describe themselves as “the quintessential California band” that crosses between rock n’ roll, indie-folk and heartfelt protest ballads, will kick off the schedule on Thursday, October 4. Their most recent album “Sound the Drum,” was released in May. The show, which is free and open to the public, will feature Pococurante as the opening act.
    • On October 17, Grieves and Budo will bring their Northwest-brand of hip-hop to The Barn. The duo has teamed up on a pair of albums, 88 Keys & Counting in 2008 and Together/Apart in 2011. They have performed at South by Southwest 2011 and Warped Tour 2011. Curtiss King will open. Tickets are $17 for non-UCR students and $5 for UCR students if purchased in advance.

The Mowglis

  • Kaki King will perform on October 24. The Atlanta native was chosen as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “New Guitar Gods” in 2006 and is an outstanding live performer. Tickets are $15 for non-UCR students and $5 for UCR students if purchased in advance.
  • The Omar Rodríguez-López Group will perform on Halloween night, October 31, as part of the Bosnian Rainbows 2012 tour. The band, which formed in 2005, has featured a variety of members over the years, including members of The Mars Volta. Tickets are $12 for non-UCR students and $5 for UCR students if purchased in advance.
  • Singer, poet and actor Saul Williams will perform his “More than Spoken Word,” a combination of poetry and alternative hip hop, on November 7. Williams was featured in the 1998 film Slam. Tickets are $5 for non-UCR students and free for UCR students. Associated Students Program Board (ASPB) is co-sponsor of the event
  • The fall season will wrap up with the KUCR Comedy Apocalypse VI. on November 14.  Tickets are $12 for non-students and $5 for UCR students if purchased in advance. Performers will be announced.
