Nelly to Headline UC Riverside Block Party 2012

Annual kick-off concert open exclusively to current UCR students and members of UCR Alumni Association

Hip-hop artist Nelly is the headliner at UC Riverside's Block Party 2012.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu)  — Hip-hop artist Nelly will help welcome University of California, Riverside students back to campus as part of the exclusive Block Party 2012 concert on Friday, September 28 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bell Tower.

In addition to Nelly, who is the second highest selling hip-hop artist of all time with over 35 million records sold worldwide, the lineup features rapper Dom Kennedy, indie rock band Cold War Kids and pop/dance/electronica band STRFKR.

The Block Party celebration is the annual kick-off to the school year and features student organizations, food booths, side-stage performances and 99.1 KGGI DJ ODM playing hip-hop, techno and top-40 music, and a beer garden for individuals 21-and-over. It is sponsored by Associated Students Program Board, Student Life, Campus Vitality, and Housing, Dining and Residential Services.

The concert is not open to the general public, but is free for current UCR students and members of the UCR Alumni Association.

Senior Jenny Guzman, co-director of concerts for UCR’s Associated Students Program Board (ASPB), said that the 2012 lineup “is diverse, with performers that will make students, mingle, dance and reminisce. It will be a new, and unexpected, Block Party.”

“Block Party takes a lot of planning and hard work to put it together and I am so excited to see the final product that day,” agreed junior and co-director Nneoma Akubuilo. “I am looking forward to seeing all the artists perform.”

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with STRFKR scheduled to perform first at 5:45 p.m. Cold War Kids will go on at 6:45 p.m. followed by Dom Kennedy at 7:45 p.m. and Nelly at 8:45 p.m.

Current UCR students will need to show their valid student ID to gain admission. UCR Alumni Association members may attend, but must RSVP online in advance. Staff and faculty who present a valid UCR ID at the gate may also attend.

Campus trolleys will be available from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on the Braveheart Loop.
