UC Riverside to Tip Off Basketball Season With Midnight Madness and After Madness Dance Party on October 12

Both events are free and open to the public

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu)  — The University of California, Riverside will join schools from across the country in celebrating the official opening of men’s and women’s basketball with the Midnight Madness celebration and After Madness Dance Party at the Student Recreation Center on Friday, October 12.

“Midnight Madness is a great event,” UCR Head Women’s Basketball Coach John Margaritis said. “It’s a college event with basketball being its main focus and the team has a lot of fun meeting and interacting with  and competing and performing in an atmosphere that is second to none.  Throughout the years the crowds have been amazing.”

“Midnight Madness has become a great social event at UCR,” agreed UCR Men’s Head Coach Jim Wooldridge. “The slam dunk and three-point shooting contests between the teams, along with the player skits and music, make the evening one of the best times of the year.”

The event is free and open to the public, with doors opening at 9 p.m. and the fun beginning at 10 p.m. Parking for non-permit-holders is $5 and permits may be purchased from the electronic kiosk in lot 24 off of Canyon Crest.

Scheduled highlights of the evening’s event’s include:

  • Introductions of the members of the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
  • Greetings from Head Coaches Wooldridge and Margaritis.

  • Performances by Hylander Hype and the Highlander Girls.
  • Skits by the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
  • A skills competition by members of the women’s team.
  • A dunk contest by members of the men’s team.

Following the basketball festivities, the Recreation Center will transform into the After Madness Dance Party, slated to begin at 11:30 p.m. and run to 1:30 a.m. The party will feature Power 106 DJs Justin Credible and DJ Inferno. The event is sponsored by UCR Associated Students Program Board.
