UCR to “Stuff the Bus” to Support Operation SafeHouse
Campus is participating in regional drive to collect items for homeless and runaway youth in crisis

The UCR community will collect items for the "Stuff the Bus" event, which will benefit Operation SafeHouse.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — The University of California, Riverside community will be collecting toiletries, canned goods and other supplies from November 1 through 7 in advance of the November 8 “Stuff the Bus” event to support Operation SafeHouse and teens in crisis.
“UCR’s participation in Stuff the Bus demonstrates our interlaced culture of service,” UCR Chancellor Timothy P. White said. “ Through the generous altruism of our students, faculty and staff, we can ensure that marginalized youth can avoid the dangers of the streets and have a path to greater opportunities.”
Founded by UCR alumna Amy S. Harrison, Operation SafeHouse runs shelters in Thousand Palms and Riverside for homeless and runaway youth in crisis from ages 12 to 18, providing them with intervention and outreach services and transitional living programs.
“The Stuff the Bus event helps our kids all year long with items they desperately need to make an already very disturbing, distressful life, at such as early age more bearable,” Harrison said. “It helps them to know that ‘yes they are good kids and someone cares.’”
A Riverside Transit Agency bus will pick up the items donated by the UCR community at 1 p.m. on Nov. 8 at the bus stop on Canyon Crest Drive next to Amy S. Harrison Field and Parking Lot 24.
Items can be dropped off at one of 13 on-campus locations. Needed items include mops, brooms, vacuums, cleaners, dish sets, silverware sets, pot and pan sets, dish soap, disinfectant spray, wipes, sponges, napkins, sandwich bags, freezer bags, laundry soap, soap, toilet paper, towels, shower curtains, shower gel, deodorant, toothbrushes, hair brushes, razors, shaving cream, lotion, feminine hygiene pads, tampons, mattress pads for twin beds, twin bed sheets, pillows and blankets, canned foods, pasta and cereal.
Sponsors of the Stuff the Bus event include the Riverside Transit Agency, Riverside Plaza, the United Way, Burrtec, ImageOne and the City of Riverside.
UCR sponsors include the UCR Athletics Department, UCR Physical Plant, MBA Student Association, Student United Way, Alpha Phi Omega and the Student Wellness Partners.
