“Music as Medicine” concert series begins Feb. 20.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – Student performing groups from the Department of Music at the University of California, Riverside will be featured in a series of free noontime concerts which kicks off on Wednesday, Feb. 20, on the patio of the School of Medicine Education Building.

The series, conceived jointly by faculty in the Department of Music and School of Medicine, begins with the Tabla Ensemble, directed by Abhiman Kaushal, and the Jazz Big Band, directed by Matt Zebley. The free performances are open to the campus and greater Riverside community.

“There is ample evidence to suggest that the enjoyment of music contributes to a sense of well-being,” said Dr. Emma Simmons, associate dean for student affairs in the School of Medicine. “This is a natural collaboration between two very different disciplines that promotes an atmosphere of wellness for the greater UCR community.”

The concert series will present a variety of music styles and genres, from classical chamber music and choral music to mariachi, bluegrass and bagpipe ensembles, said Paulo Chagas, chair of the Department of Music.

“The music department is active in promoting both Western and world music through a diversity of ensembles, where students get a broad understanding of music and musical performance,” Chagas said. “We welcome everyone in celebrating the healing joy of ‘Music as Medicine.'”

All of the concerts will be held at noon on the outdoor patio on the north side of the School of Medicine Education Building, adjacent to the well-traveled pedestrian plaza between that building and the Orbach Science Library.

The concert series schedule is as follows:
