Take Steps to Get Fit as UC Riverside Hosts “UC Walks” on May 22

UCR community will do laps around track to promote fitness, win cool raffle prizes

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu)  — Promoting an active lifestyle and building campus and community spirit are the goals of the fourth annual system wide “UC Walks” Event to be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 12 noon at the UC Riverside Track.

Last year’s event, in which walkers toured the interior of the campus, saw 188 participants cover a total of 346 miles in 5,182 minutes. The distance is the equivalent of 13 marathons. And while the walk was successful, Wellness Program Coordinator Julie Chobdee thought it was time to shake things up.

“Since this is our fourth annual system wide UC Walks, we thought we would change the event format and location,” explained Chobdee. “Having the walk at the track means that there is no physical beginning or end to the walk. Walkers of all fitness levels, ages, and abilities can walk together and share in the camaraderie and spirit of health and wellness.”

This year’s event is open to all faculty, staff and students, with participants also receiving a UC Walks T-shirt, sunscreen, lip balm, and healthy refreshments. Scotty Highlander will be in attendance and DJs from Student Life will keep the crowd pumped up with great music. The Student Recreation Center staff will be available for demonstrations and to answer questions as well.

Chobdee said that walkers will earn raffle tickets for each lap walked between noon and 1:30 p.m. A raffle drawing will be held every 15 minutes, with prizes donated by the Faculty/Staff Wellness Program, The Well, Staff Assembly, Kaiser and StayWell Health Management.
