Free “Music as Medicine” concert series concludes May 15

The “Music as Medicine” concert series concludes with performances May 8 and May 15.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The “Music as Medicine” noon concert series concludes this month with bagpipes and bluegrass on Wednesday, May 8, and mariachi music on May 15 at the University of California, Riverside. All performances are on the patio of the School of Medicine’s Education Building, next to the pedestrian plaza between the School of Medicine building and the Orbach Science Library.

The concerts are free and open to the public. There is a fee to park on campus. Permits may be purchased at the information kiosk on West Campus Drive near the campus entrance at University Avenue.

On May 8, Ian Whitelaw, director of music for the UCR Pipe Band and a lecturer in the Department of Music, will perform jigs, classical music of the bagpipe (piobaireachd), and traditional and punk versions of “Danny Boy.” The UCR Bluegrass Ensemble, directed by Janet Beazley, will perform a selection of traditional and original bluegrass, traditional songs and fiddle tunes.

The final concert on May 15 will feature Mariachi Mexicatl de UCR, which performs traditional mariachi music at campus and community events, directed by Laura Sobrino and Johanna Prado-Lazareno.
