Wondering where to spend the last few dollars in your wallet? Instead of hieing over to a coffeehouse for a fancy, overpriced latte, take a detour over to the Equipment Management Warehouse in the Corporation Yard. Every month, up to a hundred people line up outside the warehouse for a chance to get deals on used office equipment, bikes and furniture at the UCR excess equipment sale.

“We have been doing [the sale] for so long that our customers always know we have a sale once a month,” says Judy Hodge, the administrative assistant of the warehouse. The sale runs from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. every first Tuesday of each month. The next sale will be held on June 4.

Ryan Charette, who assists with managing the sale, advises attendees to come early. “Quite a few of the returning customers show up to get in line about a half-hour to an hour before it starts,” he says.

While the crowds tend to die down by the afternoon, many of the great buys go fast. Bicycles are usually the hottest items, as they sell from $25 to $35. “We get [them] from Parking Services and the UCPD from students leaving the bikes on campus,” explains Charette.

Other popular items for sale are vehicles, computer parts and smaller things from the UCPD lost and found, such as jewelry and iPods. Last November, a hockey rink sold for $2,500.

Customers who register on the Public Surplus website (www.publicsurplus.com) can bid on bigger items, such as vehicles, online. “Once the item goes up for auction, the person who is bidding on it can come by and take a look at it before the auction closes, [but] it is best to call ahead to make sure that we are here to show it,” Hodge says.

Eighty percent of the sale proceeds go back to the departments that donated the items.

The Equipment Management Warehouse is located on 3401 Watkins Drive. For information on the sales, contact Ryan Charette at X24298 or Judy Hodge at X25544.
