RIVERSIDE, Calif. — With tension between the Black community and police seemingly on the rise in the aftermath of recent court decisions, UC Riverside Theater Professor Rickerby Hinds has decided to try to address the issue and foster discussion through the arts.

Co-sponsored by the UCR Department of Theater, Hinds will put on a special, free presentation of his award winning play, “Dreamscape,” on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Studio Theater in the UC Riverside Arts Building. A panel discussion on the relationship between law enforcement and the Black community will immediately follow the performance.

“Dreamscape” is based upon the 1998 shooting by Riverside police of 19-year-old Tyisha Miller while sitting in her car. Hinds tells the story through the eyes of “Myeisha Mills,” exploring her life through poetry, dance and beatboxing.

“I decided to do this performance in order to give our community an opportunity brought about through the arts, to react to the Zimmerman verdict in a positive way,” said Hinds, an associate professor of playwriting at UCR. “I’m hoping to begin an ongoing conversation on the ongoing adversarial relationship between the law and the Black community. I would like to see anyone who believes they have a stake in this issue to be in attendance.”

Admission is free. Seating in the Studio Theater is limited to 144 people and seats may be reserved in advance (until 10 minutes before curtain) by emailing suzie@bpcmediaworks.com. Parking will be available for $5 in Lot 1.
