Staff Assembly President Robert Wolfer and Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox will welcome delegates from across the UC system to the Council of UC Staff Assemblies meetings, Dec. 4-7, 2013 at UC Riverside.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Delegates from each of the other nine UC campuses as well as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, and the UC Office of the President will visit the campus as the UC Riverside Staff Assembly hosts the fall meeting of the Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) on December 4-6, 2013.

Highlights of the three day event include receptions, meetings of the delegates and several presentations, including UCR Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox, School of Medicine Founding Dean G. Richard Olds, and Chair of the UC Regents Bruce Varner.

CUCSA is the umbrella organization for Staff Assembly units across the UC system and is led by Chair Ken Feer of UCOP, Chair-elect Rob Kerner of UC Davis and Secretary Elizabeth Bautista from UC Merced. Each campus, lab or office sends a senior and junior delegate to the quarterly meetings, which rotate from site to site.

“The meetings are an opportunity for delegates from across the UC system to learn more about each campus, to work together on issues that affect staff members, and to hear from speakers who represent the campus or the university as whole,” said UCR Staff Assembly President Robert Wolfer, IT manager in the Graduate School of Education.

“One of the best things about CUCSA is being able to visit our sister campuses and experience their unique character first-hand,” Feer said.

The work groups will be meeting on several topics, including how local CUCSA delegations function, what best practices are conducted around campuses, and how to improve involvement, engagement and advocacy of and for staff across the UC system.

Feer said that another discussion topic will be the new UC Path Center, which was recently opened near UCR.

“The delegation is looking forward to learning more about the current status of the UC Path project, something which will impact staff at all UC locations,” he said. “We will ask how the project will move forward and change our day-to-day work.”

“The work group process is very collaborative and we work on topics that are relevant across all campuses,” Wolfer said. “We don’t limit it to a specific campus and their issues, but to things that affect all campuses.”

As an example, Wolfer cited CUCSA’s work last year on the UC’s two-tiered retirement system and how it would affect women who had taken time off for maternity leave.

“Sometimes we find the process doesn’t allow us to make any change, but our job is to ask the question,” Wolfer said. “In this case, we were able to help some people out.”

While the workgroup sessions are closed to guests, CUCSA features several presentations by guest speakers that are open to the campus community. Scheduled speakers include Varner, Wilcox, Olds, Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives of UC Riverside School of Medicine and Staff Advisor to the UC Regents Kathy Barton and her counterpart from UC Santa Barbara, Donna Coyne, Vu H. Pham from the UC San Diego’s Rady School of Management, and Deputy Chief Information Officer from the UC Office of the President Mark Cianca

Varner, who is a resident of the Inland Empire, will speak on Friday, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. in room 355 of the Highlander Union Building. Wolfer said he is looking forward to the presentation and that he hopes to have a full house of staff members in attendance.

“This will be a great opportunity for staff to hear Chairman Varner’s vision, what he does as chair of the Regents, and his thoughts about issues that affect the staff,” Wolfer said.
