UCR Leads in City Year Applicants for Third Year in a Row

School is fourth overall in accepted participants

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — UC Riverside students are well known for their dedication to public service, but in 2014 it is once again a group of recent graduates who are helping the school attain acclaim; for the third year in a row, UCR leads the nation in graduates applying to the City Year program.

A total of 131 graduates applied to participate in the program, which partners with schools and teachers to place 2,800 volunteers in 247 high-need schools across the country. Corps members work to keep young people in school and on track academically through in-class support, one-on-one and small group tutoring, mentoring and after school programs.

UCR was fourth overall in confirmed participants with 37, down from 2013’s record total of 51.

“It was an extremely successful year for City Year and we are thrilled that UC Riverside is once again in the top-5 for both applications and confirmed corps members,” set Bert Rivera, senior regional recruitment manager for City Year.

While the 131 applicants is down from 2013’s record-breaking total of 156, it still beat out larger schools like second place UCLA (126) and third place University of Michigan (102).

Rivera said there were a couple of factors that affected the number of individuals accepted from UCR.

“More than 60% of UCR grads apply to City Year Los Angeles, rather than one of the other 24 cities,” Rivera said. “The number of applicants from other area schools to City Year Los Angeles increased dramatically, which made it harder for UCR grads to get in. Also, this was the first year that we didn’t expand the City Year Los Angeles program, so we didn’t recruit as heavily as we have in the past.”

Rivera said that he hopes UCR students who apply for City Year will consider applying to work in cities other than Los Angeles. “A higher percentage of applicants get invited to serve in cities outside of LA versus those applying only to Los Angeles,” he said.
