The Guardian Scholars Program provides emotional and financial assistance for UCR students who were emancipated from foster care. These are students that many times do not have the same family support that traditional students do, and if not for the program, these students would not have even their most basic needs — such as food and shelter — met.

The program is collecting nonperishable items to help stock the GS food pantry. According to Alyssa Heckmann, GS program coordinator, the pantry is stocked with plenty of toothbrushes and toothpaste, but other toiletry items would be appreciated. They also have a student who is lactose intolerant, and another with a gluten allergy, so those specialty items are also needed.

Gift cards to Subway, Starbucks, and places within walking distance of the campus are also appreciated, so that Guardian Scholars have food options when the campus closes during the break.

Items can be dropped off at:

  • Alumni & Visitors Center administrative suite
  • Events Management & Protocol

If you would like to participate, please deliver items by Friday, Dec. 12.

You can also support the Guardian Scholars program by donating to Dance Marathon. We have a matching donor up to $25,000—so every dollar donated counts as two!
