RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Students, staff and faculty of the University of California, Riverside, as well as residents from the Riverside community are invited to come march to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, The memorial is hosted by UCR’s Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Pi Epsilon chapter.

The MLK Celebration and Tribute begins at the UCR bell tower at 12 noon. After a short program, participants will walk to Park Avenue Baptist Church, 1910 Martin Luther King Blvd, Riverside. Another program is set for 2 p.m. at the church. The organizers will be giving out t-shirts to the first 300 participants.

We wanted to do an event that was more impactful and that can be attended and be felt throughout the UCR campus and Riverside community,” said Lazaque Mugerwa, vice president of Alpha Phi Alpha and event organizer.

King was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, joining the Sigma Chapter while a graduate student at Boston University in 1952.

The celebration is free and open to the public, with free parking in UCR Lot 30. Those who do not want to walk back from the church can ride a campus shuttle back to Lot 30. Other campus organizations working with Alpha Phi Alpha, Pi Epsilon Chapter on this event include UCR African Student Programs, the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Park Avenue Baptist Church, Riverside Police Department, Riverside Parks & Recreation and UCPD.
