Budding K-12 Scientists Present Their Research on Campus This Week
Projects cover topics ranging from understanding the relationship between exercise and memory, to the temperature of color, to whether potting soil is worth the cost
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — More than 300 K-12 students from 30 schools in the Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) will present their science and engineering projects to the community this week at the University of California, Riverside.
The students will participate in the 26th annual Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Room 302 in the Highlander Union Building on campus. The public can view all the projects from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (parking is free in Lot 26).
The awards ceremony at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, at Ramona High School is also open to the public.
The students’ 280 projects will address questions such as: How does exercise impact memory? What is the temperature of color? Why doesn’t the ocean freeze? Can you blow up a balloon with a banana? And is potting soil worth the cost?
A hands-on competition designed to capture the interest of young people, the fair has in past years inspired students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The students, who come from five high schools, five middle schools and 20 elementary schools, will set up their projects today, Monday, Feb. 9; UC Riverside faculty and graduate students will judge the competition on Feb. 10; UCR undergraduates who make up the Science Ambassadors in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) will judge the primary and elementary projects.
CNAS and the Bourns College of Engineering are co-hosting the fair, providing the judges and sponsoring the awards.
