RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — The search for UC Riverside’s next Athletics Director has begun.

Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox is chairing an advisory committee to set out the parameters for the search, with representation from the administration, from the UCR Athletics Association, and even a star athlete, Brenda Martinez, who graduated from UCR and continues to compete in national and international track competitions.

In addition to the chancellor and Martinez, others members of the committee are UCR Vice Chancellor for Business and Administrative Services Ron Coley: UCR Extension Dean Sharon Duffy; and attorney and Athletics Association chair-elect Chis Jensen.

In the coming weeks and months, they will search for candidates who are qualified to lead an NCAA Division I Athletics program with 17 sports. The Highlanders compete in highest level of collegiate competition in the country, and are members of the Big West Conference, made up of nine schools in California.

“The person we are looking for will value victory on the field, but also victory in the classroom,” Wilcox said. “At the end of the day our athletes are students and they are here to earn a degree.”

Janet Lucas is serving in the position in the interim. “The program is in very capable hands while we make a decision about next steps,” Wilcox said.

The Athletics Director is a contract position, and the process will be confidential. People with candidates to suggest, or who wish to apply, may send information to the advisory committee at the email address: chancellor@ucr.edu.
