RIVERSIDE, Calif. — UC Riverside School of Medicine first-year psychiatry resident Dr. Janet Charoensook has been appointed to the editorial board of the American Journal of Psychiatry – Residents’ Journal for the 2015-16 academic year.

As one of the associate editors, Charoensook will make decisions about accepting manuscripts for the journal, peer reviewing these manuscripts, and developing ideas for the journal with the rest of the editorial board.

Charoensook said she applied for the position, in part, out of her appreciation for the journal.

“I applied for this position because I wanted to be a part of the journal’s legacy and help shape the journal – which has been a great resource for my intern year,” she said.

Charoensook was one of the first four students to join the UCR SOM Psychiatry Residency Program in 2014. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she earned her undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley and her M.D. from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica. Her interests include psychotherapy, addiction, forensic, cultural, and geriatric psychiatry.

“I really hope to improve my own writing skills and develop a discerning and critical eye for manuscripts,” Charoensook said. “This will help me in my practice by helping me learn to better appreciate the concepts prevalent in evidence based medicine.”

Dr. Gerald A. Maguire, chair of the UCR SOM Psychiatry Residency Program was thrilled with Charoensook’s appointment.

“We are ecstatic that Janet has been named associate editor,” he said. “It is truly remarkable that a resident in her first year of training has been named to this important academic position. We are very proud of Janet’s appointment and we have no doubt she will serve admirably in this vital capacity.”
