UCR Freshmen Launch Year at Convocation

UCR Convocation Welcomes the Class of 2019

UC Riverside’s new freshmen — the class of 2019 — heard some advice from campus leaders at the convocation ceremony that launched the school year. It was held Monday, Sept. 21, inside the Student Recreation Center.

“We all have to question what’s in the book. We all have to question what is discussed in class,” Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox told the nearly 3,000 freshmen assembled. “We are a collection of scholars. And the better the scholars, and the more committed the scholars, the better our university.”

The event also included remarks by Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Paul D’Anieri and Ashley Harano, the Associated Students President, along with a formal procession of faculty and administrators in full academic regalia.

Following the New Student Convocation, housing residents and first-year transfer and commuter students attended the R’Side Celebration at the bell tower. The event featured fair-style food, live music and games.
