Dean’s Message – Fall 2015

Neal A. Schiller

Interim Dean Neal A. Schiller

When I look back at my more than 36-year career at the University of California, Riverside, I am often amazed by the changes that have taken place at this very special campus. And while change can be stressful, it also brings with it an opportunity for growth and improvement.

I am honored to be serving as the interim dean of the UCR School of Medicine, and while we are going through a period of change in leadership, I am pleased to say that our unique social missions remain unchanged.

Perhaps the best example of this can be seen in our medical students. Our third year students have begun their Clinically Integrated Longitudinal Clerkships, while our first and second year students continue to learn from our outstanding faculty members and enjoy their Longitudinal Ambulatory Care Experiences. Our medical students have just hosted the 3rd Annual UCR Health Fair and recently opened a new free monthly clinic for community members in San Bernardino. In addition, Kaiser Permanente has awarded us a new grant in support of our pipeline program activities. Faculty and staff are hard at work completing plans for the fourth year of education. And, in just about 18 months, we will celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2017 while welcoming in the Class of 2021.

My tenure as interim dean will be brief, as a nationwide search for the permanent dean is well underway, with a goal of identifying that individual in early 2016. I am confident that the outstanding search advisory committee and search firm of Isaacson, Miller will work hard to identify outstanding candidates for the position.

As we approach the end of the calendar year, I hope you will join us for the annual School of Medicine Recognition Celebration on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015. In addition to honoring staff and faculty service milestones, we will also bid farewell to two members of our executive leadership: Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration Jocelyn Nakashige and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education Dr. Mahendr S. Kochar. More information about the time and location will be announced in the near future.

In closing, I hope you will look to this period of change in the UCR School of Medicine not as a difficulty or a trial, but as an opportunity to evolve and grow, both as individuals and as an organization.
