Brooks’ talk, titled, “The Fire This Time: The Collegiate Arms Race and Its Casualties of War,” will provide insights into events leading up to the Missouri football team led boycott that resulted in the president’s resignation at the university last fall.

“This was an important moment in the movement for racial justice in higher education across the nation,” said Ken Simons, the director of African Student Programs at UCR. “African American students from multiple campuses took up the call for change and we saw administrators across the country, including right here in Southern California, stepping down from their positions in response.”

On Nov. 9, 2015, Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin and President Timothy Michael Wolfe announced that they would no longer serve in their administrative capacities at Missouri. This came after African American students at the university complained of inaction on the part of school leaders in dealing with racism on the overwhelmingly white campus. Black student leaders conveyed their displeasure over students openly using racial slurs and other incidents. Several Missouri organizations, including the football team and the student association, called for Wolfe to step down.

“Wolfe’s resignation is viewed as a big moment in the movement for racial justice in higher education across the nation,” said Simons.

This event is hosted by African Student Programs and co-sponsored by UCR Intercollegiate Athletics and the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs.
