RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — The University of California, Riverside invites local residents to join the campus community in a march to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on Friday, Jan. 15. The march and memorial is hosted by UCR’s Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Pi Epsilon chapter. It begins at 12 p.m., and runs through 3 p.m.

King was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, joining the Sigma Chapter while a graduate student at Boston University in 1952.

“The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity want to highlight, share and celebrate the work and legacy of their fellow Fraternity brother, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with the campus of UC Riverside and greater Riverside community,” said Leo Kim, a member of UCR’s Alpha Phi Alpha.

The MLK tribute begins at the UCR Bell Tower at 12 p.m. After a short program, participants will walk to Park Avenue Baptist Church, located at 1910 Martin Luther King Blvd. There will be another program at the church, which will conclude at 3 p.m. A shuttle will be made available to bring participants back to campus.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for later that evening at 7 p.m. at the UCR Bell Tower.

The celebration is free and open to the public, with free parking in UCR Lot 30. Co-sponsors of the event include African Student Programs, the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Park Avenue Baptist Church, Riverside Police Department, Riverside Parks & Recreation and UCPD.
