Two UCR Sociology Professors Honored by Choice Magazine

“Handbook on Evolution and Society: Toward an Evolutionary Social Science” named Outstanding Academic Titles

Jonathon Turner and Alexandra Maryanski

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – “Handbook on Evolution and Society: Toward an Evolutionary Social Science,” edited by Jonathon Turner and Alexandra Maryanski, two UCR sociology professors, has been named one of the Outstanding Academic Titles of 2015 by Choice Magazine. Each year Choice recognizes approximately ten percent of some 7,000 works reviewed by editors. The honor reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice, and brings with it the recognition of the academic library community.

Turner is the author of nearly 40 influential books, which have been published in 12 different languages. He describes himself as “primarily a general theorist” who seeks to integrate existing theories in order to produce more robust, comprehensive, and thus general explanatory theories.

Maryanski is the coauthor of four books outlining her approach to a more biological-based sociology, plus another edited book devoted to evolutionary analysis in the social sciences. A sociologist who was also trained in biological and cultural anthropology, Maryanski is one of the founding figures in a new area of sociological inquiry labeled evolutionary sociology.

“Handbook on Evolution and Society” brings together original chapters by prominent scholars who have been instrumental in the revival of evolutionary theorizing and research in the social sciences over the last 25 years.
