Fundraiser for Syrian refugees set for Feb. 4

“A Night of Talent for Refugees” – Feb. 4

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – The University of California, Riverside’s Middle Eastern Student Center (MESC) is hosting a fundraiser for Syrian refugees on Thursday, Feb. 4. The event is open to the public, and begins at 6:30 p.m. It will be held at the University Theatre. Presale tickets cost $10, and $15 at the door. Free parking will be available in Lot 6.

“The Syrian refugee crisis is the worst humanitarian crisis of our time,” explained Tina Aoun, the director of MESC at UCR. “More than 12 million people are currently being affected – that’s an entire generation at risk. The world cried and mourned for little Alan Kurdi when his body washed up on the shore of a Turkish beach. It is not only our part as a Middle Eastern community, but also as an American community, to come together to provide hope, basic needs, and creative solutions for these vulnerable people.”

“A Night of Talent for Refugees” is a family-friendly event. The lineup for the fundraiser includes: various cultural dancing, singing, poetry, music performances, and Arabic skits.

The Muslim Student Association and MESC will contribute 100 percent of the evening’s proceeds to the Kayany Foundation. Founded in 2013, Kayany was established in response to the Syrian refugee crisis. It delivers aid and initiates projects in informal tented settlements in Lebanon.

“Our goal is to raise $6,500 in order to build a classroom in Lebanon, where there are millions of Syrian refugees struggling to resettle in an already crippled country. Our hope is to help the disadvantaged youth access education, a powerful and priceless tool they all deserve,” Aoun said.

The event is co-sponsored by the Muslim Student Association. For more information about the event, please call the MESC office at 951-827-7233.
