UC Riverside Presents Encuentros/Encounters Conference

The day-long conference and concert is set for Feb. 25

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – The University of California, Riverside Center for Iberian and Latin American Music presents Encuentros/Encounters 2016, a daylong conference and performance on Thursday, Feb. 25. This year’s event is titled “Flamenco and the Articulation of Identity,” and it will bring together 12 scholars of flamenco dance and music from all over the U.S. and Spain.

The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Interdisciplinary Building South, Room 1113. Complimentary parking permits will be available at the UCR campus kiosk located on West Campus Drive at University Avenue.

There will be a concert following the conference at the Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts, 3824 Main St., Riverside. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. It will include spirited renditions of traditional flamenco songs and dances by the Miguel Bernal Flamenco Ensemble.

As a prelude to this year’s conference, Spanish singer and guitarist Salvadora Galán will appear at the music department’s “Wednesday at Noon” series on Feb.24.  She will perform from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in ARTS 157.

All of the events are free and open to the public.

Walter A. Clark, professor of music and chair of the music department, is the founder and director of UCR’s Center for Iberian and Latin American Music, which was established in 2004 to foster research and performance in an interdisciplinary spirit, embracing the entire musical heritage of Iberia and Latin America. This will be the 12th annual Encuentros/Encounters.

The event is made possible by UCR’s Office of the Chancellor, College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Department of Music, and the city of Riverside.
