Dean’s Message – Winter 2016

Neal A. Schiller

Interim Dean Neal A. Schiller

As most of you know, in early January we welcomed four finalists for the position of dean of the UCR School of Medicine. Each brought impressive credentials and a broad range of ideas about the future of our school, and it was a pleasure to meet and visit with each of them.

I was particularly thrilled to see such a strong turnout by our clinical and biomedical sciences faculty, staff and students at each of the candidate’s vision seminars. That engagement once again demonstrated the commitment of the individuals across the school to our mission of serving the people of Inland Southern California. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to participate.

Work is already well underway in preparation for the LCME Survey Visit scheduled for February 2017, the final step toward the critical goal of securing full accreditation for the medical school. Senior Associate Dean for Education Dr. Paul Lyons is the faculty accreditation lead and co-chair of the LCME Self-Study Task Force along with Director of Clinical Education Dr. Andrew G. Alexander and myself. Of course, many of you are contributing to this effort as well, either as members of committees and subcommittees, in support of the information gathering effort, or in preparation for the site visit itself. Again, let me thank you all for the work that you have already done and what you will do in the coming months.

Please mark your calendar for Saturday, April 9, 2016, as the School of Medicine will be hosting its annual Open House. This year’s event will feature out Pipeline Programs, including Future Physician Leaders, FastStart and the Medical Scholars Program and more information will be forthcoming.

I would like to personally thank all of the faculty, staff and students who have worked hard to keep the medical school moving forward during this transition period. It is really a team effort and I have been impressed by everyone’s contributions to this enormous task. Our medical school is succeeding because of your personal investment in our mission. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Neal Schiller, Ph.D.
Interim Dean
