RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – Chicano Student Programs at the University of California, Riverside, presents the 15th annual César E. Chávez Run/Walk on Saturday, April 2. The race is open to the public. Online registration is open, and you can register the morning of the event, between 7:30 and 8:15 a.m., outside of Olmstead Hall. The 5K run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. There will also be a children’s 1K walk/run at 9:30 a.m.

The yearly race on the UC Riverside campus was initiated in 2002 to further Chávez’ message of service, “The end of all education should surely be service to others.” It is being held in conjunction with César E. Chávez Day of Service and Learning, a holiday honoring the life, work and values of Chávez. The day also signifies the importance of education and community.

“As our way of contributing to the memory and philosophy of such a respected and admired legendary figure, our event seeks to unify the community by bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds,” explained Estella Acuña, the director of Chicano Student Programs.

Participants can sign up as individuals for $20; a team of five can register as a group for $80. Everyone is encouraged to set a fundraising goal, and to get friends and family members to support them. Race participants who turn in $40 or more in pledges, or teams that turn in $150 in sponsorships, will have their registration fees waived. They will also receive an official T-shirt and commemorative token. A cash prize will be awarded to the top team in the Run and Walk categories. Awards will be given to the top male and female walker. The top runner in each division will also be awarded a prize.

UC Riverside Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs James Sandoval will sponsor a pair of challenges. In the undergraduate challenge, he will donate $10 for the first 100 students who cross the finish line before him. And, for the Campus Department Challenge, he will sponsor a breakfast for the department that enters a team and raises the most money.

All the proceeds will support student scholarships at UCR.

In addition to the 5K run/walk, there will be a community service fair, with higher education information tables, crafts, vendor booths, art, speakers, and music.
