Each issue, we present a list of UCR staff and faculty favorites — from walking spots to gardens to events.

This week, in honor of April being National Garden Month, we highlight the top landmarks of the UCR Botanic Garden. With more than 3,500 plant species from around the world and 40 acres to explore, there is plenty to see at the Gardens.

1. The Rose Gardens

The Rose Gardens

A favorite of many, the Rose Gardens have more than 300 old and new selections, including grandifloras, heritage varieties and All America Rose Selections (AARS) award winners.

2. Herb Gardens

Herb Garden

Complemented by a traditional garden design, the Herb Garden is filled with aromatic, culinary and medicinal plants from around the world.

3. Iris Garden

One of the most popular gardens at UCR, the Iris Garden features over 150 named bearded iris cultivars in a variety of colors.

4. Geodesic Lath Dome

This commemorative redwood lath dome is home to a special collection of shade plants and palms.

5. Pond

Pond

Located at the northern side of the gardens, the pond creates a relaxing atmosphere. Be sure to keep an eye out for turtles and koi fish here.

6. Cactus Garden

Cactus Garden

The Cactus Garden displays of hundreds of succulents, cacti, agaves, yuccas and other plants with curious forms. Several tall stalks are currently in bloom in shades of pinks and red. Hummingbirds are frequent visitors here.
