Planning for the Future: Sustainability at UC Riverside

Join UCR in celebrating Earth Day 2016 on April 22

Earth Day is on Friday, April 22. The Office of Sustainability will host events throughout the day to celebrate.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. ( – Students, staff and faculty at the University of California, Riverside, are invited to learn about the Earth, its environment, and what we can do to protect it during the annual Earth Day celebration. Earth Day is on Friday, April 22 and the UC Riverside Office of Sustainability will host events throughout the day to celebrate.

All activities are free and open to the public.

“Earth Day celebrations at UCR are about recognizing our connection to the greater ecosystem of our planet, in the context of our campus community. For 2016, we are looking to the future, both though our past accomplishments and through our continued aspirations for realizing a socially, environmentally and economically equitable world,” said John Cook, the director of sustainability at UCR. “We want everyone to join us on this journey.”

Schedule of events:

*Note: All activities from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will be held at the bell tower.

  • 10:30 a.m. – Planning for the Future STARS and Climate Action Plan.
  • 11 a.m.  – Designing a Sustainable Future through Curriculum and Research.
  • 11:30 a.m.  – Building a Sustainable Future: Construct and Share your Ideas.
  • 12 p.m. – KUCR: Sounds of a Sustainability Future.
  • 1 p.m. – Engaging with our Future: Sustainability Liaison and Ambassadors Program.
  • 1:30 p.m.  – Stewards of our Future: Operating a Sustainable Campus.

*Note: All activities from 3 to 6 p.m. will be held at the R’Garden.

  • 3 p.m. – Earth Day of Service: Tree planting and clean up, coordinated by Circle K.
  • 4 p.m. – Cool Campus Challenge recognition and tree planting, and art performance. “Exhibition and Playin’ Improv’,” will be performed by Home Street Home with Jungwon Ahn, Maiko Le Lay, Luke Portillo and “Fancy Dance and Hoop Dance,” will be performed by Evangelina Lopez.
  • 6 p.m. – A sunset earth dinner, sponsored by Feel Good.
