Headquarters Will Focus on Safety Every Day

Refreshments, tours, safety fair and the official ribbon cutting May 17 is open to all on campus

The headquarters of safety at UC Riverside houses three offices.

Balloons and bagpipes will help set the mood for a grand opening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 for a new building that houses UC Riverside employees who work in Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management and the Office of Emergency Management.

These are the people who keep the campus safe from fire, crime, and the kinds of toxic chemicals that are necessary tools in the laboratories of a large public research university. These are the people who plan how the business of the university will continue in the event of a large emergency, such as an earthquake or major fire.

Their new home is 26,000 square feet at the end of Linden Street, on the northeast side of campus. It includes a 1,700 square foot training room that will double as the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) in the event of a campus crisis.

All are invited to the open house, which begins with Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox cutting a ribbon, moves on to tours, demonstrations, refreshments and a vendor-sponsored safety fair.

A recent reorganization by Ron T. Coley, UCR’s vice chancellor for business and administration, links the offices that work with campus risk and crisis management under one title, called Enterprise Risk Management. Three units will be in this new building. The fourth, the UC Police Department, will stay in their dedicated space on the corner of Linden St. and Canyon Crest.

“This will optimize the management of risks and allow for a more cohesive and focused approach for both campus preparedness and risk mitigation, response and recovery,” said Coley.

The new building is environmentally friendly, with a LEED Silver certification. Employees are all in the process of moving over and getting furniture and cabinetry in place.

“Our staff is always in motion providing support and training, but recently we have also been moving from our spot near Lot 6 to the other side of campus,” said Russell Vernon, director of Environmental Health and Safety. “We will celebrate the achievement of a project that was more than 15 years in the making,” Vernon said.
