Dean’s Message – Spring 2016

Neal A. Schiller

Interim Dean Neal A. Schiller

As I write to you today, I am in my final days as interim dean of the UC Riverside School of Medicine. Deborah Deas, M.D., M.P.H. will begin her tenure as the Mark and Pam Rubin Dean and Chief Executive Officer for Clinical Affairs on Monday, May 16, and we will formally welcome her with a reception for students, faculty and staff at the School of Medicine Education Building patio on Friday, May 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. You can RSVP to the reception at this link.

I will be returning to my position as senior associate dean for student affairs and I look forward to continuing our work to recruit the best and brightest students who will help us fulfill the school’s mission of improving the health of our friends, families and neighbors in Inland Southern California.

My thanks go out to Dr. Emma Simmons and the entire Office of Student Affairs team for their outstanding work during my tenure as the interim dean. The willingness of each and every member to step up and ensure that the necessary work was done speaks volumes.

I also want to personally thank the outstanding support and service of our terrific leadership team who provided the guidance and insight needed to move the medical school forward. Each of the members of this team stepped up to assist me – this successful transition period was truly a team effort. Thank you!

The interim dean position was not one that I sought, but one in which I have been honored to serve. It has provided me with a unique opportunity to look back upon what we have accomplished so far, to see where we stand today, and present a vision of what is possible for the future. The foundation for our future has been built through the extraordinary efforts of hundreds of committed staff and faculty, and through the thousands of hours of academic and clinical study by our students, and we will see these efforts first bear fruit on Match Day on Friday, March 17, 2017 and at our Hippocratic Oath ceremony on June 2, 2017. I expect both days will be remarkable celebrations.

But there is still work to be done. The LCME accreditation process is well underway in advance of the committee’s full survey visit on Feb. 5-8, 2017. And, of course, there is the matter of welcoming the Class of 2020 at the White Coat Ceremony on August 5, 2016 and the year-long effort of recruiting the next 60 students who will make up the Class of 2021.

In closing, I want to thank each and every one of you for your efforts in making the School of Medicine what it is today and what it will be tomorrow. There are no small jobs, no menial roles. That feeling of community is what makes the UCR School of Medicine a fabulous place to be. We have a great partnership between our students, our faculty, and our staff, and that makes this a place that is fun to come to work each and every day. I am proud to continue to be a part of it.

Sincerely,

Neal L. Schiller
