UC Walks, walking together for a healthier campus

The two-hour event brought out about 400 faculty, staff and students.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — The 7th Annual UC Walks event drew about 400 staff, faculty and students for an afternoon of exercise and comradely on Wednesday, May 18.

UCR’s outdoor track was transformed for the two-hour event that had some participants choosing how many calories to burn under the warm sun, with options that included walking laps around the track, or more physical activities such as jumping rope. Participants walked away with free t-shirts, giveaways from local venders and raffle prizes. Among the gifts was Arianna Huffington’s latest book “The Sleep Revolution.”

The annual event, organized by UCR’s Wellness Program, also drew large crowds last year, said Julie Chobdee, Wellness Program coordinator. UC Walks is designed with the intention of “promoting a healthier lifestyle,” said Chobdee, including fostering spirit and community within the campus, she said.

Leading the afternoon walk were Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox, Vice Chancellor of Business & Administrative Services Ron T. Coley, Director of Athletics Tamica Smith Jones, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Paul D’Anieri, and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs James Sandoval.
