RIVERSIDE, Calif. ( – Thirty-one students this week are completing FastStart, a five-week residential program offered by the UCR School of Medicine that helps students with the knowledge and skills needed to have a successful start to their college education.

“The FastStart program is designed to help ease students into the rigors of the college experience. Our students complete the program with a good foundation that helps them to be successful in their undergraduate studies,” said Teresa Cofield, director of pipeline programs.

FastStart has been offered since 1999 for selected incoming freshman from disadvantaged backgrounds who aspire towards a medical or science-based career. The students in the program attend daily classes in pre-calculus, biology, and chemistry, the main foundations of the science curriculum. Other activities include study skills workshops, visits to research labs, tours of local hospitals, health disparities seminars, and physician mentor activities. UCR medical students also participate by organizing activities related to the medical school process.

The students were honored at the annual FastStart Awards Ceremony on Saturday, July 23, and will formally complete the program on Friday, July 30. Parents, faculty and staff attended the event to recognize the achievements of the students in the program. The special guest speaker was Dr. Eric Brown, D.D.S., a UCR alumnus who participated in the FastStart program in 2007.

Students who are accepted into the FastStart program are awarded a scholarship that covers the cost of the program, room and board, instruction, and books. Support for FastStart is provided in large part by the Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Grants Program.
