UCR Style: How the Campus Defines Fall Fashion

Documenting fashionable and chic staff, faculty, and students of UC Riverside

Just for fun, the UCR Style team of Bethanie Le, Pearl Yon and Justin Chan, went out on a recent sunny Wednesday afternoon to see what the campus community is sporting this fall. All photos were taken by Justin Chan.

The UCR Style team went out on a sunny Wednesday afternoon to see what the campus community is sporting this fall.
  • UCR Style: Fall Edition

    John Briggs, professor of English and director of the University Writing Program, was spotted in front of the Humanities Building wearing a hat from Australia, and a jacket and maroon tie with a flourish pattern.

    Professor Briggs has been styling the hat for about 15 years. “I’m a hat fan. I think everyone should wear one,” he said. In one word, Briggs described his clothing style as perpetual. “Men’s shirts and coats like what I’m wearing are part of at least a 200-year-old tradition,” he explained.

    Sterling Hampton, 21, philosophy major, was photographed wearing a long bomber jacket over a black tank and jeans.

    Hampton said his look is inspired by European fashion trends.

    Joy Pimentel, 18, cell, molecular and developmental biology major, was spotted with friends on R'Day wearing a denim jacket, a yellow top, black jeans, and slip-on shoes.

    Sade Akenzua, 21, media and cultural studies major and business minor, styles her floral dress with black booties, a watch, and a gold statement necklace.

    Akenzua wears a flowy, floral printed dress with a cut-out back. She describes her style as “edgy yet feminine."

    Mikaela Valentino, 22, English major, was spotted jamming out to the rapper, Azure, at a campus Nooner concert. Sporting her “relaxed, earthy style,” she wears a crochet vest along with a woven backpack that she adorned with homemade pins and patches.

    Valentino bought this multi-colored, woven backpack at Olvera Street. She personalized it by adding homemade pins to the bag, including one that represents the UCR Meditation Club that she is a part of.

    Rennie Burke, 30, second-year medical student, was spotted near Orbach Science Library. He was wearing a collared, button-down shirt, corduroy olive pants, and suede, wingtip shoes. “I like textures,” Burke said.

    Isabelle Lopez, 20, anthropology major, wears a white long-sleeve shirt paired with a red, button-up skirt. Lopez’s look was inspired by the 70’s. “I just really admire the simplicity of the fashion then and how it looks really nice together,” she said.

    Lopez paired her lug-sole monk strap cranberry loafers with black over-the-knee socks.

    Christine Panshi, 18, economics major, wears a white, lace dress with a denim jacket, and hand-woven shoes from Australia.

    Panshi bought her retro cat-eye sunglasses from a booth at a market in Arcadia. "They had a sale for two for $8," she said excitedly.

    Panshi got her open-toed shoes from Sydney, Australia. "It was hand-woven by an aborigine lady. She told me to be careful with them," said Panshi.

    Cesar Phan, 21, business major, was spotted studying near Coffee Bean while wearing a long-sleeved flannel shirt over a black tee, jeans, and dark brown boots. His long board was the accessory that finished off his look.

    Johannes Endres, assistant professor of art history and comparative literature, was spotted in front of Hinderaker Hall, wearing a navy blazer, a blue-and-white gingham shirt, and forest green pants he bought in Germany.

    Professor Endres paired his black shoes with the patterned socks he bought in Germany. His interest in fashion started through reading "old-school style guides" and learning about how dress has historically changed. He also draws inspiration from his art history colleagues.
