Life@UCR: Highlander Happenings for Halloween and Día de los Muertos

A concert, food truck festival, haunted maze, and more!

UC Riverside is full of life. In this section, Life@UCR, we remind you of events coming up – and give you insight to some you might have missed. This week, we’re rounding up all the Halloween-themed events and Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) activities on campus.

“Not Invisible! Not Forgotten! Stories of Trans Sex Workers” Lecture

Join Amalia Cabezas, associate professor of gender and sexuality studies, and Xóchiltl Chávez, assistant professor of music, as they observe the Day of the Dead with an altar and live-streamed broadcast to share stories of sex workers who have been murdered in the United States and around the world.

The public is invited to contribute to the altar, which will be on display at the Tomás Rivera Library from Thursday, Oct. 27, through Saturday, Nov. 5. Students will set up the altar on Oct. 27 from 9:40 a.m. to 11 a.m. and will be interviewed by Chávez for a live-streamed program of the Smithsonian Latino Virtual Museum.

Trick or Treat Food Truck Festival

The UCR Fall 2016 Food Truck Festival will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27.

From unique fusion foods to Instagram-worthy desserts, there will be a frightfully fun parade of mobile cuisines at the UCR Fall Food Truck Festival on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. around the HUB patio and the bell tower areas. In celebration of Halloween, this year’s festival encourages participants to come dressed in costume to receive free prizes. Fifty percent of all Food Truck Festival proceeds will be donated to the R’Pantry, a resource for UCR students who are experiencing food insecurity.

Bats in the Belfry: A Halloween Carillon Concert

The Halloween bell tower concert will take place on Monday, Oct. 31 at noon.

As part of the UCR Bell Tower 50th Anniversary carillon concert series, University Carillonneur David Christensen with guest carillonneur Gary Barnett will perform tunes to get the campus in the Halloween spirit. The concert will take place on Monday, Oct. 31, at noon at the bell tower. The music selections will include themes from Ghostbusters, The Addams Family, The Munsters, and other haunted tunes.

The Student Recreation Center will host a series of Halloween events.

Experience terrifying chills and exhilarating thrills at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) with their haunted maze and dance party on Monday, Oct. 31 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Halloween party will feature: a live DJ, dancing zombies, freaky lights, and side-show decor. All the activities are free for UCR students and SRC members. Check out other Halloween-themed events at the SRC from their “Scream Week” on Facebook.

Día de los Muertos Nooner

Day of the Dead

Hosted by Chicano Student Programs, the Día de los Muertos Nooner will feature a live performance by musical group, Casa de Calacas. There will also be vendors, face painting, food sales, and special dedication altars presented by various student organizations. The event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 143 Costo Hall.
