Cartoonist Robb Armstrong to Speak at UC Riverside

The free public lecture will be held on Nov. 3

UCR’s African Student Programs presents “An Evening with Robb Armstrong.”

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – The University of California, Riverside’s African Student Programs will host “An Evening with Robb Armstrong,” on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. in HUB 302. Armstrong is the cartoonist behind the popular comic strip “Jumpstart.”

“We all draw inspiration from hearing about people who overcame adversity, which makes Robb Armstrong a voice that needs to be heard,” said Ken Simons, the director of African Student Programs.

During Amstrong’s stop at UCR, he will discuss the success of his award-winning comic strip, which reaches more than 80 million readers, and how he overcame industry stereotypes and adversity. He will also discuss his new book, which was published this year, “FEARLESS: A Cartoonist’s Guide to Life.”

“What’s most important about Armstrong coming to UCR is that he has the ability to reach many people from all walks of life through his writing, and that really resonates on our campus,” Simons said.

Armstrong has been described as one of the hottest cartoonists in America by People Magazine. His comic strip is the most widely syndicated daily strip by an African American in history. He travels across the country for speaking engagements – most recently he spoke at Drexel University and the Groton School in Massachusetts. Other recent stops include the Shipley School, the Buckley School, Syracuse University, and the Smithsonian Institute.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Entrance will be on a first come, first served basis. Complimentary parking is available in Parking Lot 1. There will be a book signing after the lecture. The event is co-sponsored by the UCR College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, the Departments of Creative Writing and Ethnic Studies, and it is supported by the Highlander Empowerment Referendum.
