Highlanders Get Ready: Homecoming 2016 is Nov. 18 and 19

Scot Fest, food trucks, basketball, tours, reunions and more will take place over two days

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — UC Riverside is planning a party Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19, to call all Highlanders home. This year’s Homecoming celebration is packed with free events, food tastings, Scot Fest, campus tours, and of course, a basketball game.

The deadline to register for some of the events is Thursday, Nov. 10, so this is an early look at the options. The Scot Fest on Saturday is perfect for the entire family, including games, food trucks, music, photo booths, and more. No reservations are required for that event.

To make the day even more exciting, Nov. 19 is also Discover Day, the annual open house for students and families who are considering their college options. It includes tours of housing, workshops for parents, and information about access and financial aid.

Parking is free for all events.

Here is a list of highlights for the weekend:

Nov. 18: Celebrate alumni achievements at the 30th Annual Awards of Distinction. Meet the award recipients:

  • Shola Lynch, M.A. ’95, receiving the Distinguished Alumnus Award
  • Ofelia Valdez-Yeager ’69, receiving the Alumni Service Award
  • David Gutierrez ’04, receiving the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award

Nov. 19:

  • Scot Fest: 9th Annual Highlander Scot Fest featuring games for the whole family, interactive college booths, photo booths, music, a send-off of the basketball team as they march to the Student Recreation Center for the Homecoming basketball game, and much more.
  • Tour the Citrus Variety Collection: experience the scents, flavors, shapes and colors of fruits and trees of one of the world’s most diverse living collections.
  • Chicano Latino Alumni (CLA): Annual dinner and dance event, featuring Honorable Cruz Reynoso as keynote speaker. Reynoso practiced law for over 53 years and eventually became the first Latino appointed to the California Supreme Court. He is professor emeritus at UC Davis School of Law. In 2000, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
  • Black Alumni Mixer: Celebrate the reestablishment of the UCR Black Alumni chapter. Join the festivities at African Student Programs on campus and enjoy good food and fellowship and learn how you can get involved.
  • CNAS Alumni BBQ: Meet and mingle with CNAS deans, college leaders, faculty, alumni, current students, and friends. Arrive early (12 noon – 2 p.m.) to the CNAS Department Open House and meet with prospective students, as well as faculty and staff. Get a tour of the newest buildings and labs.
  • Tour Guide Reunion: See and experience how much the campus has grown with fun events planned throughout the day, such as campus tours, Highlander tailgate and BBQ, and the Homecoming basketball game.
  • Homecoming basketball game: Come cheer on the men’s basketball team as they take on the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds.
