Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education and Director of University Honors Richard Cardullo, is now serving as UC Riverside’s interim vice provost for Undergraduate Education. His new role became effective Feb. 21.

Cardullo took over the role formerly occupied by Cynthia K. Larive, who now serves as interim provost and executive vice chancellor.

Cardullo is the Howard H Hays Jr. Chair of University Honors and professor of biology. He earned a Ph.D. in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University and joined the UCR faculty as an assistant professor of biology in 1991.

His research has focused on the molecular, cellular, and physical determinants of fertilization in a variety of animal systems. A second research focus has been on how people learn — especially in K-12 and undergraduate environments. As a member of the University Honors Faculty, Cardullo has contributed to a number of classes in UCR Honors including freshman ignition seminars as well as courses on civic engagement and the nature of research.

He has received numerous accolades for his contributions including the UCR Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award, UCR Distinguished Teaching Professor and in 2012 was selected as one of 40 educators nationally as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Vision and Change fellow.

“I am grateful to Rich for his willingness to take on the additional responsibilities of the VPUE office and excited to continue working with him. He will continue to direct our honors program while serving as interim VPUE,” said Larive via a campuswide email announcement.
