11th Annual César E. Chávez 5K Run/Walk Set for April 7

Kids' Race, Easter Egg Hunt to Highlight Chicano Student Programs Fundraiser

Cesar Chavez 5K Kids Race

The César Chávez 5k Run/Walk raises money for student scholarships.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — Runners, joggers and walkers are invited to participate in the 11th Annual César E. Chávez 5K Run/Walk at the University of California, Riverside on Saturday, April 7, 2012.

The event is sponsored by Chicano Student Programs at UCR  and was created in 2002 to help raise funds for student scholarships at UCR as well as Riverside area youth programs. It honors Chávez, a labor leader and Latino civil rights activist who helped found the United Farm Workers (UFW). The 5K course winds around the UCR Campus, with the start/finish line located near Watkins Hall and the Carillon Tower.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with the 5K beginning at 8:30 a.m. In addition to the run/walk, there will be a 1K Kids Run for children 12-and-under and an Easter Egg Hunt at 10 a.m.

Participants can sign up as individuals for $20 or recruit co-workers, friends and family to run as a team of five for $80.  Individuals and teams are encouraged to set a fund raising goal and get friends and family members to support them. Race participants who turn in $30 or more in pledges or teams that turn in $150 in sponsorships will have their registration fees waived, receive an official t-shirt and commemorative token. The top individual and team pledge solicitors will be awarded special prizes.

As in years past, UCR Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs James Sandoval will sponsor a pair of challenges for participants. In the undergraduate challenge, he will donate $10 for the first 100 students who cross the finish line before him. For the Campus Department Challenge, he will sponsor a breakfast for the department that enters a team and raises the most money. The School of Business Administration (SoBA) team has won that challenge each of the last four years.

Other challenges include the UCR Registered Student Organization Challenge, a $200 award given to the top finishing organization, and the Residence Hall Challenge, in which the hall that raises the most money receives a pizza party.
