Tamala Tamu Sukari Choma decided to become a health care attorney because she knew her work would have an immediate impact on people.

As the new senior counsel for UC Riverside’s campus and health affairs, she brings 14 years of experience as a health care lawyer and speech language pathologist. Choma will be working with David Bergquist, chief campus counsel, as well as with the School of Medicine and the Office of Research and Economic Development.

“It’s nice to work for an organization whose values align with my own values,” said Choma, who grew up in the San Diego area. “And people will always need health care, so you can make an impact on their lives.”

Before joining UCR at the end of February, Choma was the associate counsel at Genesis Health System in Iowa. Her career includes serving as associate counsel at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, corporate counsel for Sharp Healthcare in San Diego, and senior counsel for Dignity Health. Choma also opened her own firm in 1997 and practiced intermittently until 2015.

She obtained her juris doctorate with a focus on health law from the University of San Diego School of Law, a bachelor’s degree in communicative disorders from San Diego State University and master’s degree from San Francisco State University, also in communicative disorders. She is currently a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association, where she serves as the web and technology liaison for the health law section in-house counsel interest group.

At UCR, Choma will assist in campus affairs’ legal matters, but will also focus on the SOM’s health care enterprise needs. Choma, a wife and mother of two girls, ages 6 and 11 years old, said she wants to also make herself available to mentor students interested in health care law.

“The Office of Campus Counsel is fortunate to have an attorney with Tamala’s experience and acumen as part of its team. The breadth of her knowledge and her ‘can do’ attitude will assist the School of Medicine and the campus in achieving its goals over the next several years,” Bergquist said. “Her values and work ethic are a great compliment to this office and to her clients in general.”
