RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – Bella Merlin, professor in the Department of Theatre, Film, and Digital production at the University of California, Riverside will be performing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in the Los Angeles Philharmonic (LA Phil) Series on Tuesday, March 21.

As part of the Colburn Celebrity Series, “Night and Dreams: A Schubert & Beckett Recital,” will be directed by new LA Phil artist-collaborator Yuval Sharon, and performed by several other artists including Merlin and her husband, Miles Anderson, who recently directed “Tartuffe,” at UCR. Audiences can expect a unique evening of Schubert songs and short plays by Samuel Becket.

“I’m working alongside some of LA’s ‘greats’ when it comes to Beckett – including UC colleagues Judith Dolan (costume design professor from UCSD) and John Iacovelli (scenic design professor from UCD),” Merlin said. “Placing the one-acts next to the Schubert songs is a real lesson for me as an actor in rhythm and precision. At every rehearsal, I feel I’m learning new tools to bring back to my students in their own study of language and storytelling.”

Sharon has this to say about the evening:

“Fans of the great 20th-century writer Samuel Beckett might at first be surprised to hear that his favorite composer was Franz Schubert, the quintessential Romantic composer of the 19th century. But placing their works into the same context – especially Beckett’s short plays and Schubert’s lieder – reveals how powerfully both evoke haunting, existential images with such great economy. This evening-length performance explores the common ground between these two creators in a theatrical evening structured like a recital presentation. The aim is to unleash the music’s drama and the drama’s music, and to explore how the austere theatricality of a single Schubert song can illuminate the sonorous beauty of Beckett’s taut prose.”

The performance begins at 8 p.m. For more information about the event, please go to the LA Phil event website.
