At the annual César Chávez 5K Run/Walk, you can walk, crawl or run.

This 16th annual family focused tradition, organized by UC Riverside’s Chicano Student Programs and other campus partners, is set for April 8. The event even includes a 1k for children under 12 years old.  Registration is now open.

People are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, umbrellas or blankets and make a picnic out of the day while they cheer on the runners/walkers, said Arlene Cano Matute, program coordinator with Chicano Student Programs (CSP). Guests will also enjoy a resource and health fair, vendors, music, and activities for all.

Participation is open to the entire community; runners/walkers can join as individuals or can pull together a team of five people. The three mile run/walk takes participants on a scenic route on the perimeter of the campus. Last year about 350 people participated, Matute said.

Money raised during this race is invested in scholarships for UCR students.

To help motivate UCR students, staff and faculty members to participate, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs James Sandoval has announced two challenges:

  • He will donate $10 for the first 100 students that cross the finish line before him;
  • He will sponsor a breakfast for the department that enters a team and solicits the most money.

Eight-year-old Sereya Guevara, the César Chávez 5K 2016 top fundraising winner, participated in the Kids 1k in April 2016. ucr

Another person who takes fundraising to the next level is 8-year-old Sereya Guevara. She was last year’s top fundraiser, with over $300 in pledge money, Matute said. Sereya is the granddaughter of former CSP Director, Alfredo Figueroa.

Other awards:

  • Fundraising: Participants who turn in $40 or more, or teams with $150 or more, will have their fees waived and will also receive a commemorative t-shirt; the top fundraisers will receive special prizes;
  • Awards for the top team in the Run/Walk category; top male and female; and top runner in each division;
  • Cash awards, and a pizza party are also available for UCR student organizations and residence hall groups who come in as top fundraisers.

“This annual event brings the community together, our on-campus and off campus community,” Matute said. “It’s a day for embracing César Chávez, teaching our youth about this hero, all while fundraising the critically needed funds for our students.”
