The power of the UCR Highlander network was on display last week in Sacramento as a group of staff, students, faculty, and community members joined together to visit elected officials.

Wednesday, March 8 marked the annual UC Day in Sacramento. The event is an opportunity for alumni and supporters from each of the 10 campuses in the UC system to meet with legislators to promote strong state support.

This year UCR had five staff members attend UC Day activities, as well as 18 volunteer advocates comprised of UCRAA Board members, UCR Foundation Trustees, alumni, and a couple of graduate students.

“As we continue to grow access to the University of California, it will require a strong partnership with our state legislators to provide an excellent education at an affordable price. Visits like the recent one, help us strengthen that relationship,” said Jorge Ancona, assistant vice chancellor of Alumni & Constituent Relations, and executive director for the UCR Alumni Association.

This year’s advocacy day included meetings by the UCR contingent with Inland Empire legislators and other California government officials to share with them why they value the University of California. Assemblymember Jose Medina and Senator Richard D. Roth were among the legislators who met with UC Riverside participants.

“We are very thankful to have the strong support of UCR alumni,” said Elizabeth Romero, assistant vice chancellor for the Office of Governmental and Community Relations. Romero, a UCR alumna, helped lead briefing sessions for the group. “UC, and UCR represent the very best of higher education in our state, and our alumni and students continue to contribute in meaningful ways to the economic, social, and political health of California.”
