UC Riverside’s Department of Philosophy ranks No. 1 in the world for the frequency with which published papers are cited by other philosophers, according to QS World University Rankings.

Several other UCR departments or programs were ranked in the top 50 for citations: chemistry, 11th; agriculture, 12th; materials science, 15th; chemical engineering, 26th; computer science and engineering, 36th; and mechanical engineering, 44th.

The philosophy department ranked at the top of 200 university philosophy departments for research citations per paper. Thirty-seven countries are represented in this year’s philosophy subject rankings.

Rounding out the top 10 behind UCR are Princeton University, Australian National University, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, University of Pennsylvania, University of Colorado-Boulder, UC San Diego, Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Carnegie Mellon University.

In addition, the UCR Philosophy department tied for fourth in H-Index citations, a measurement of both productivity and impact of published work of a scientist or scholar. Also tied for fourth in this category are Yale University, University of Edinburgh, University of Pennsylvania, and Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

The QS World University Rankings look at the research citations per paper in order to measure the quality of the scholarship performed by the faculty in a department, said Mark Wrathall, chair of the Department of Philosophy.

“The most direct way to assess the influence of a research publication is to look at how often it is cited or referred to by other scholars in their own research. This approach is arguably a more unbiased indication of the quality of a department than surveys that ask respondents to rank programs by their academic reputation,” he said. “Our No. 1 ranking in the world – Princeton ranked No. 2 on this indicator – thus shows that the faculty members of the UCR philosophy department are having a significant impact on the discipline of philosophy.”
