RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – UC Riverside’s annual Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) Conference and Workshop will be held Thursday, March 30 and Friday, March 31 at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), which is part of UCR’s Bourns College of Engineering.

The conference provides a worldwide forum for reviewing research, applications, and regulations for real-world emissions testing systems. The keynote speaker is Zissis Samaras, a professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Lab of Applied Thermodynamics at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece. Samaras will review the state of emissions testing in Europe.

Now in its 7th year, the conference features in-depth discussions about the state of PEMS technology and the future of the field. More than 200 international participants from government, industry and academia are expected to attend as interest in portable emissions testing of vehicles continues to grow.

“As vehicle technologies advance, there is a continuing need for real-world emission measurements. Some of the increased testing was certainly spurred by the Volkswagen scandal, but even before that event regulators across the globe had already decided that more real-world testing was needed to ensure we are achieving energy conservation and air quality metrics to protect human health and the environment,” said Kent Johnson, associate research engineer at CE-CERT and the conference organizer.

Session topics include: Approaches for Making In-Use Particle Measurements; Development of New Instrumentation for In-Use and PEMS Measurements; PEMS Applications for Full Fleet Characterization; and the latest PEMS Research Developments.

Visit the CE-CERT website for the full agenda and registration details.
